Catapult Dance

Based in Newcastle NSW, Catapult dance is a ‘not for profit’ contemporary dance organisation for professional artists, emerging artists and young people.

Our mission is to strengthen the presence of contemporary dance in Newcastle, the Central Coast and Greater Hunter, by creating a hub for dance artists to develop their practice, gain skills and collaborate across disciplines: extending their networks and profile both in the professional arts and broader community – propelling dancers forward.

Catapult has a number of programs:

  • PROPEL: Professional Artist in Residence Program (supported by artsNSW & Force Majeure)
  • The FLIPSIDE PROJECT: Youth dance and multi- arts program and ensemble.  Shortlisted in 2016 for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Dance,  Recipient of 2015 & 2016 City of Newcastle Dramatic Arts Award for excellence in choreography (supported by artsNSW and the NSW Department of Education and Communities)
  • MASTER-CLASS SERIES: Bringing the finest choreographers to Newcastle for Weekend Workshops (supported by the City of Newcastle)
  • COMMUNITY OPEN CLASSES: Evening classes for adults, pre professionals, young people – caters for all ages (supported by the City of Newcastle)
  • COMMUNITY AND SCHOOLS OUTREACH PROGRAM: Catapult will provide professional choreographers to come to you.

Our venue, has two large studios with sprung floors (Harlequin floors sponsorship), the venue has the capacity to hold professional choreographic residencies, youth projects, showings and performances, as well as workshops

Catapult is supported by artsNSW, the NSW Department of Education & Training, and Ausdance NSW.

Catapult dance has been invited to be one of Ausdance NSW’s first Associate Companies (2016-2018). This program aims to build the capacity in the dance sector by supporting three companies to assist them to become more sustainable.

Our core aims and objectives are:

  • To Build a contemporary dance sector in Newcastle, and create a hub for emerging artists, young people and professional practitioners to create and develop as artists in Newcastle.
  • Lead, cultivate and champion professional contemporary dance practitioners, established NSW multi-disciplinary artists and regional emerging artists through  long-term choreographic residencies and professional opportunities in regional NSW.
  • Provide Opportunities for the young people of the Newcastle, Hunter and Central Coast regions to access and participate in contemporary dance, and evolve into the next generation of Australia’s premier contemporary dance artists
  • To Foster an appreciative audience for contemporary dance work and build audience capacity in the Hunter region by broadening our profile, reach and reputation

Call Out for Emerging Artists

Are you aged approximately 18 – 26 and have a passion to dance?

Did you train at a high level in classical or contemporary to be a dancer and life moved you in a new direction?

Do you love to dance but have had a bit of a dance break, but would love to reignite your passion for dancing?

Then we have a program for you. U-Turn is a new contemporary dance program where you will have the opportunity to perform, create and work with Catapult’s artists in residence through workshops and the development of new works.

Let us know if you would like to join us in this program. The program will commence next term and will involve two hours a week.

All participants must have current membership.  Membership fees are $20 per year.
